What this is for
Sequential serial, barcode and QR on anodised aluminium, bound to one asset for its service life. Chosen where the tag must outlast several rounds of refresh and survive being wiped down. In service
Adhered to a laptop lid, a monitor bezel or a tool case - anything that leaves the building and comes back. Anodised aluminium takes a barcode cleanly and survives being wiped with alcohol during a hand-back.
How it fails
Metal foil labels lift from textured plastic. On a laptop lid with a soft touch coating the adhesive releases within months, and the asset comes back to IT with no identifier and no way to tell which of four identical machines it is.
Who fills it in
Nobody. Asset number and barcode are printed; anything a technician needs to add goes in the asset system against the scan, not on the label.
How it is made
Anodised aluminium bar stock with a permanent adhesive, built to stay attached and legible for the whole life of the asset rather than to resist removal. If removal is the thing you need to prevent, the destructible vinyl asset tag is the right product and this one is not.
What to check on the proof
The asset number format and its range. This is the one decision that cannot be corrected later without re-tagging everything: codes allocated per purchase order collide the day you order a second batch, and by then the first batch is on the equipment.
Common questions
How long does anodised aluminium last on it asset?
Photo anodised rather than printed, so the legend is inside the metal and lasts the life of the asset. The most expensive option here and the longest to produce. Wrong for anything replaced annually, where you pay for durability you then throw away. For it asset specifically, the question to ask is where the units actually sit: the same stock behaves very differently in a conditioned corridor and in an unconditioned plant room.
What does AST-ALU-BAR cost at my volume?
$1.13 per unit at 100, falling to $0.84 at 1,000 - about 26 percent less per unit at the top break. The full table is on this page and there is no quote step. The entry break is 100 units and the top break is 1,000. Per unit that is a 1.3 times difference, which is worth doing the arithmetic on rather than guessing: take your annual device count, add what you expect to add this year, add about ten percent for spoilage and re-tags, and order to the break that number crosses. Buying past it is buying storage rather than savings, and stock held for years is stock that outlives a licence renewal or a change of address.
How fast will AST-ALU-BAR ship?
Production runs five to six business days plus transit. Engraving and anodising are physical processes with their own queue, and they are genuinely slower than printing - a supplier promising this in two days is either holding stock or not doing what they say. You approve a print accurate proof before payment is taken, and that proof comes from the same engine that generates the file the press receives, so what you approve is what gets printed. There is no separate proofing round trip by email.
Do I have to use the serialization on AST-ALU-BAR?
Each unit prints with a unique code and a QR. The first scan binds it to a device and a location; every scan after that opens the inspection form for that device type and writes a permanent record. The building owner and the authority having jurisdiction can scan the same code and read the history without an account or a phone call. If you never scan anything, the asset tag still works as an ordinary one, so nothing is lost by ignoring the feature.
