Service label
Rack and patch panel label, polyester
TIA-606 identifier format. Matte face so it reads under datacentre lighting without glare.

What this is for
Sized for the rack rail and the patch panel face, matte so it reads under datacentre lighting without glare. Print to whatever identifier scheme your documentation already uses rather than inventing one here - a label that disagrees with the drawing is worse than no label.
In service
On the rack rail or the equipment face, read in a cold aisle under bad overhead light. Matte polyester is specified for exactly that: gloss throws the ceiling lights straight back at anyone reading from below.
How it fails
These fail by accumulation. Nobody removes the old label when equipment is replaced, so a rail carries three generations of identifier and the newest is not obviously the current one.
Who fills it in
Printed, not written. A data centre that lets people write on rack labels ends up with handwriting nobody can attribute and asset numbers that do not match the CMDB.
How it is made
Polyester with a matte topcoat, chosen because it takes a scanner cleanly. Gloss stock in a rack aisle throws the overhead lighting straight back into the camera, and a code that photographs beautifully and will not decode is a worse outcome than no code at all.
What to check on the proof
The row, rack and U fields against your actual naming convention, and the code size. These are small labels read at arm length in poor light, so anything below the scan floor is dropped rather than shrunk - the proof shows you exactly what will print.
Common questions
How long does polyester last on server rack?
Several years indoors, resistant to solvents and cleaning agents. Less tear resistant than Tyvek and less permanent than metal. A middle option, right for most indoor equipment and wrong for extremes. For server rack specifically, the question to ask is where the units actually sit: the same stock behaves very differently in a conditioned corridor and in an unconditioned plant room.
What does LBL-RACK-POLY cost at my volume?
$0.22 per unit at 250, falling to $0.16 at 2,500 - about 27 percent less per unit at the top break. The full table is on this page and there is no quote step. The entry break is 250 units and the top break is 2,500. Per unit that is a 1.4 times difference, which is worth doing the arithmetic on rather than guessing: take your annual device count, add what you expect to add this year, add about ten percent for spoilage and re-tags, and order to the break that number crosses. Buying past it is buying storage rather than savings, and stock held for years is stock that outlives a licence renewal or a change of address.
How fast will LBL-RACK-POLY ship?
Production runs four to five business days plus transit. Synthetic stocks need a cure or dwell step after printing that card does not, which is where the extra day goes. You approve a print accurate proof before payment is taken, and that proof comes from the same engine that generates the file the press receives, so what you approve is what gets printed. There is no separate proofing round trip by email.
Do I have to use the serialization on LBL-RACK-POLY?
Each unit prints with a unique code and a QR. The first scan binds it to a device and a location; every scan after that opens the inspection form for that device type and writes a permanent record. The building owner and the authority having jurisdiction can scan the same code and read the history without an account or a phone call. If you never scan anything, the service label still works as an ordinary one, so nothing is lost by ignoring the feature.
Proof approval, reprints and what happens if an order arrives wrong are the same for every product: how ordering works.
