Placard
Fire department connection placard
Marks the connection type, the system it serves, and the required pressure. Mounted at the FDC where an engine company will look for it.

What this is for
Mounted at the fire department connection, marking the connection type, the system served, and required pressure. An engine company reads this from the apron in poor light, so the reflective option is worth the difference on any FDC that is not directly lit.
In service
At the fire department connection, outside, on the street face of the building. The reflective option exists for one reason: the people who need it arrive at night with headlights and a torch.
How it fails
FDC placards are stolen and painted over in roughly equal measure. Aluminium survives the weather and loses to a repaint, after which the legend is a raised shape under two coats of the building colour.
Who fills it in
Engraved with what the connection serves and the required pressure. Handwriting has no place on a placard read under pressure by someone who did not design the system.
How it is made
Heavy anodised aluminium with an engraved or deeply etched face, mounted outdoors at the connection. It is specified for legibility at distance after a decade of weather rather than for appearance: the audience is a crew arriving at night who have never been to the building.
What to check on the proof
Character height against the distance it will be read from. This is the most commonly over-filled artifact we print - every extra line shrinks the type, and a placard that cannot be read from the apparatus has failed regardless of how complete it is. If the system description will not fit at size, shorten the words rather than the type.
Common questions
How long does anodised aluminium last on standpipe?
Photo anodised rather than printed, so the legend is inside the metal and lasts the life of the asset. The most expensive option here and the longest to produce. Wrong for anything replaced annually, where you pay for durability you then throw away. For standpipe specifically, the question to ask is where the units actually sit: the same stock behaves very differently in a conditioned corridor and in an unconditioned plant room.
What does PLC-FDC-ALU cost at my volume?
$13.99 per unit at 25, falling to $10.36 at 250 - about 26 percent less per unit at the top break. The full table is on this page and there is no quote step. The entry break is 25 units and the top break is 250. Per unit that is a 1.4 times difference, which is worth doing the arithmetic on rather than guessing: take your annual device count, add what you expect to add this year, add about ten percent for spoilage and re-tags, and order to the break that number crosses. Buying past it is buying storage rather than savings, and stock held for years is stock that outlives a licence renewal or a change of address.
How fast will PLC-FDC-ALU ship?
Production runs five to six business days plus transit. Engraving and anodising are physical processes with their own queue, and they are genuinely slower than printing - a supplier promising this in two days is either holding stock or not doing what they say. You approve a print accurate proof before payment is taken, and that proof comes from the same engine that generates the file the press receives, so what you approve is what gets printed. There is no separate proofing round trip by email.
Do I have to use the serialization on PLC-FDC-ALU?
Each unit prints with a unique code and a QR. The first scan binds it to a device and a location; every scan after that opens the inspection form for that device type and writes a permanent record. The building owner and the authority having jurisdiction can scan the same code and read the history without an account or a phone call. If you never scan anything, the placard still works as an ordinary one, so nothing is lost by ignoring the feature.
Proof approval, reprints and what happens if an order arrives wrong are the same for every product: how ordering works.
